Blind Peter Barker
Remembering Hampsthwaite’s Blind Joiner - an article by Shaun WilsonLike the market town of Knaresborough, who had ‘Blind Jack’ – John Metcalf, the road builder of Yorkshire in the eighteenth century, the small rural village of Hampsthwaite had it’s blind hero also, almost a century later – Peter Barker who became known as ‘The Blind Joiner of Hampsthwaite.’ Though there are some similarities between John Metcalf and Peter Barker’s lives, these are purely co-incidental and each fulfilled a life, character and career in their own right.

Arsenic Poisoning in Hampsthwaite - The Execution of Hannah Whitley In 1789, Hannah Whitley of Hampsthwaite used a pie as the delivery medium for a fatal dose of arsenic, with the poison concentrated in the crust. She claimed She had been coerced into the act of poisoning by her employer, a local linen weaver named Horseman, who was involved in an on-going feud with the intended victim.

Amy Woodforde-Finden
A highly successful composer of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, Amy Woodforde-Finden, together with her husband and step-son, is laid to rest in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket Parish Church. Inside the church there is an impressive marble monument of her, created by the renowned sculptor George Edward Wade. It was unveiled in 1923 and a few years later, Finden Gardens in Hampsthwaite was named in her honour.[Click on title or image to link to articles]

Hampsthwaite’s Dancing for Well-Being group on ITV

A film featuring Dancing for Well-Being’s Hampsthwaite group will be shown on ITV’s Calendar North News at 6.00 p.m. on Friday 5th April. From 1st April you can also see the film on the People’s Projects website – www.thepeoplesprojects.org.uk/projects/view/together-through-dance

Dancing for Well-Being has an amazing opportunity! They are one of 5 organisations shortlisted in the ITV Calendar North region for this year’s People’s Projects. They could receive a National Lottery award of £48,800 for their project “Together through Dance”. But they need your support.

You can vote for “Together through Dance” by visiting ITV’s Calendar North region at www.thepeoplesprojects.org.uk/projects/view/together-through-dance Voting opens on 1st April and closes at midday on 15th April

In later life keeping active and involved in the community isn’t easy if you have health or mobility problems, are coping with bereavement or caring responsibilities. Dancing for Well-Being can help. They run weekly groups for older people which help improve physical, emotional and social well-being. You can move at your level, sitting or standing, and you don’t need a good memory; it’s gentle exercise, it helps release tension and stress, and the music and company can really lift your spirits!

The People’s Projects is a partnership between The National Lottery, The National Lottery Community Fund and ITV. In each ITV region 5 community organisations have been shortlisted and the 3 that receive most public votes in each region will each receive up to £50,000 to help them continue to improve local people’s lives.
